Email Icon unread notification incorrect

iOS 7.1 on 5s, my email icon unread notifications number maxes out at 250 emails no matter how many more I have in the Inbox.

I've seen screenshots of email icons with thousands of unread emails -- how can I get mine to show the actual amount?
