Email notifications not showing up

Hi

I am not receiving notifications for email in the iphone 5 lock screen or home screen. Using gmail. The emails are pushed to the phone and the phone buzzes when an email is received , but no notification. Mail is turned on in the notification system with the banner alert style. Any suggestions? This was working fine on the previous iPhone.
