Email replies show up in different spots in thread

Using Mail I am trying to find responses in an email and everything is a mess. New replies are not showing up near the top or bottom and all of the attached files in the email and not easily visible, with many of them showing as text names but they are not links to the actual files. I tried sorting by newest on top and that didn’t seem to help. What am I missing?
