email (s) will not delete

I have some emails (inbox-deleted-sent)
that will not delete and remove from the file list.
If I go into my "Mail" in the user folder and preferences
those emails are not in there
but
they remain in the email application.
HOWEVER - the "messages" ARE gone
just the "listing" remains.
Any idea how to get them out of my windows?
