Almost a year ago I bought my first Mac, after using Windows primarily for MANY years. I quickly decided the Mac would be my primary system, and have been switching over piece by piece. Most recently I moved my calendar & phonebook over. But now comes the tough one ... EMAIL.

I want to use both my MacBook Pro & iPhone for email. I also want to keep my email on GMAIL. I have a MobileMe account, so it would seem to make sense to use that for keeping the MBPro & iPhone in sync using IMAP.

I receive hundreds of emails a day. Currently, I use Agent as my email client on Windows with many filters to separate out the vast majority of messages which are from mailing lists; I also filter out email from friends, family, clients, etc. For the most part, I don't want the mailing list messages sent to my iPhone, since handling such a large # of messages would be near impossible on the small device.

Currently, I use a forwarding address (via my alumni association) to forward my email to my ISP email account. GMAIL fetches my email from there via POP3. I primarily access my email from my ISP account. I use GMAIL to occasionally do complex searches. I get SPAM filtering from all the above.

Now my problem is moving over to a new setup as described above. Ideally, I'd like to have the same folder setup in all places. Eventually, I might have more than 1 email address; I might want to handle all the addresses in a consolidated fashion.

I suspect the biggest challenge is figuring out how to filter out a subset of my email so only some goes to the iphone. I imagine there may be some issues having the same folder structure everywhere, especially without manually defining them in multiple places. Ideally, it would be great to be able to access my email even if one component goes down, e.g. if MobileMe is down use GMAIL, if my internet service is down, use MobileMe to my iphone, etc.

BTW, I won't need folder use on my ISP account ... but I'm assuming I won't be using it anymore anyway.

I want to avoid wholesale switching of email addresses ... too cumbersome.

I believe the forwarding service can forward to multiple mail servers. My ISP account might also be able to do this. I don't know about MobileMe.

I'll probably use Apple Mail on the mac, although I'm open to alternatives.

(I'll worry about exporting/importing history at a later time!)

Suggestions?

Thanks for your help!!!
