Emails sent or deleted on my iPhone disappear

I have Mail set up to access my Gmail account, and my iPhone uses those same settings. When I send or delete a message from my iPhone, however, the message disappears. It sends, but does not end up in the sent mailbox. It deletes, but does not end up in the trash. I don't see any relevant settings. How can I fix this? Thanks.
