Empty iPhone, how do I get calendar notes from Outlook onto iPhone?

I'm going to be restoring my iPhone from scratch when I get 2.1, and just wanted to know...

All my calendar events are in Outlook, and obviously the calendar app on the phone will be empty.

If I tell it to sync with Outlook, am I 100% guaranteed that it won't delete all my outlook contacts in an effort to keep it in sync with my iPhone?

Ditto on contacts...

but can't you backup the outlook data?
