Empty Trash "Unlocked Items"?

I recently put my Time Machine backups in my Trash because I had some issues backing up once I updated to Mavericks.

Now whenever I plug my external in to backup with Time Machine it has some backups in the 'Trash Bin' but when I Empty the Trash I get an alert asking me if I want to delete unlocked or locked items.

I have tried both and no matter what I do I can't get rid of these backups. Any ideas?

Try to securely empty the trash, that should do it:
