Whenever I empty the trash and the file is in use it asks me if I either want to "stop" or "continue". What's the difference? I always get the same result.

there might be no difference. A lot of things do that, I used to always wonder why Windows' Defrag window always had 2 buttons "analyse" & "defragment"

by clicking "Analyse" it checks to see if it needs defragmenting, if the outcome is "Yes" you have to click "Defragment"

When you click defragment, it analyses it again again.

Stop = Stop emptying the trash can
Continue = Continue to empty remaining contents of trash can if possible

kinda means what the words say.
