On the track
I'm not sure when this problem started... maybe after the 10.4.9 updated.. but maybe I little before, but it has been bugging me for a little while.

If I put something in the trash, no alert sound (I'm a new user so I can't really remember if it made a sound in first place, I just thought I'd say it). When I empty the trash, it doesn't make any noise at all!!! I really like that crushing paper sound and now it is gone. Everything else seems to be making sound. All the alerts work (mail, etc) but the trash one doesn't.

I checked system pref in the "sound" section and I have the alert list. I have the check mark for "Play user interface sound effects" and everything else is check marked for that matter. I look down the "alert sound" list and the empty trash sound IS NOT even there!! And on a side note I don't know why they call it "choose an alert sound" because I can't "choose" any of them. I click on them and it plays the sound. I push pretty much push any button and it just plays the sound I'm on, I wouldn't really can that a "choice", I'm not choosing anything but what sound I want to play on the speak and it changes NOTHING. WTF?

Anyway. Any ideas about how to get my trash sound back? I miss the my paper sound :( and I'm running out of paper to make the sound by hand when I delete something. Reusing already crumbled paper doesn't make the same sound... jk, jk :D.

Thanks for your help,

The Stig

UPDATE:

I looked in System>Library>Sounds and the .aiff isn't there either for the trash. Maybe I can try adding that file back in. Can somebody get their .aiff sound for the trash and send it to me and maybe I can try that. Unless somebody has a better idea. I'm open to anything that will get my little trash paper sound back :'(

My G5 iMac stops making the sounds when emptying the trash but I've never looked into it in the detail you have. I just restarted it and the sound would come back. Occasionally it disappears again, but a restart sorts it out.

Have you tried restarting your machine?

The only files in that folder are the system alert sounds. The user interface sounds are somewhere else (not sure where). Selecting "Play user interface Sound effects" from the Sound control panel is the only option there is, soo, I don't know why your Empty Trash sound went away. The sounds do not and are not meant to appear in the "Choose an alert sound" list.

 Erm, that IS all you do. You click on the alert sound you want and it plays it for you so you can decide which one you want. Once it's selected that's it. It's then set as your alert sound.

Have you used Audacity? That is the only program that has caused my system effects to stop functioning. It is more then likely due to it changing my sound hardware preferences.

The only solutions that I have heard of are opening GarageBand, checking Audio MIDI Setup, and just plain rebooting.

If your sound file for trash is not there you might have to visit your OS X installer disc with Pacifist.

I think that generally applies when you're experiencing no sound at all. I think I had that problem myself once (going to Audio MIDI Setup fixed it).

Stig, are your other user interface sounds working? It's just the trash sound that isn't?

I checked and I do not have that app. I even searched for it just incase and it was not there.

I checked "Audio MIDI Setup" there is nothing there I could see that would be a problem. I tested the speakers and they worked fine.

Make sure Audio MIDI output devices, aka speakers, :) is not set above 48kHz.

Thanks everybody for all your help! I figured out my problem!

All along it was Tinker Tool.

I've downloaded it before and played with it. So I went to check it to see if it could shed some light on my problem. I opened it and there was a check mark for "disable sound effects". I unchecked it and YEAH!! MY TRASH SOUND IT BACK!!!

I'm so happy about it :) lol. I don't remember ever changing that option but I must of changed it by mistake a while ago.

Thanks again!!
