Enable HDR causes the external display to dim

I just picked up a Monoprice Dark Matter Ultrawide display on sale during Black Friday. It is connected to a CalDigit TS3+ via DisplayPort, and I am using a CalDigit TB3 cable to a 13" MBP (15,2). The display is working fine, however, when I enable HDR, the display gets really dark. Is this expected behavior?
