I'm aware Apple have custom firmware to disable DVD-RAM on their superdrives. On my old MacBook the drive was a Matsushita (Panasonic) and although the drive was -RAM capable, firmware updates just couldn't be found.

My Penryn MacBook has a HL-DT-ST GSA-S10N drive, and these are the same ones fitted by Dell. Dell also provide firmware updates.

Can I start a debate on the possibility of enabling DVD-RAM on these superdrives?

p.s. please don't say 'buy an external drive', that's not helpful.
