Maybe my search skills are lacking, but I've had a hard time finding this question answered elsewhere.

I recently bought a 2011 15" MBP. I also have a HDMI-connected monitor from a previous computer. This monitor also has a 3.5mm audio-out link through which I've connected my external speakers. I bought the Thunderbolt->HDMI adapter, and I hooked up the monitor without a hitch. Audio works as well.

My problem is this: I can only raise/lower volume through the speaker's volume control, not the system volume control (i.e. F11 and F12). This is a pain for two reasons: I often use the apple remote, and the speakers' volume control is hard to access. Furthermore, I'd really prefer not to connect the speakers through the MBP's 3.5mm audio out female jack because the 3.5mm male cable (jack?) is frayed and fickle. I've had to solder it to a new 3.5 mm adapter once already.

Any brilliant ideas, or will I just have to 'suffer'?
