Hi,
I would like to have a huge 1TB external storage. I have a UMBP so I would like to connect it via firewire 800 since I think it's the fastest connection.

I was thinking about buying a desktop HD and a macally enclosure for it but now I'm not sure if I shouldn't get just a ready to use external HD.

What do you think ?

You'd be spending about twice as much with that enclosure and a separate drive. For that and a drive you're already talking about $175 or more.

For example http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822101094

Building your own drives used to be much cheaper, but those days have changed.
ok, I will have a look in local shops to see what they have.

I've just had a look at other brands and the prices are around $200:

Thanks for the advice.

I found the WD 1TB in a shop for 160€. I think I'll buy it.
I recently build my external HD by purchasing a WD 1TB Green ($80 Amazon) and Macally FW/USB/eSATA enclosure ($35 eBay). The best thing is that it gives you flexibility to upgrade the drive with a larger size one. That being said I am not sure how the prices are in your region.

I bought that same enclosure off of amazon for $31. Don't spend $100!
