Encrpyt Folder/File

I have an IMAC 27 i7 MID 2010 with ML 10.8.1, and would like to know how to encrypt a file and/or Directory. I see noway to accomplish this via OS X, has anyone one been able to do it with ML? If so how? If not what recommeded apps would you recommend. I would like to add if ML does not have a way (instead of encrpting the whole user folder) Then this would be a nice feature Apple can add to it's OS X

You can create an encrypted DMG file and place the files you want protected in the DMG file. When you need access to the files just unmount the dmg file.
