Encrypt external clone problem

I tried to encrypt my external clone volume in Yosemite but I get an error message saying ... A Recovery System For The Disk Is Required.

I've done a web search but I can't see this mentioned anywhere with regards to an external drive.

Also if I do manage to encrypt the clone, does that mean every time I want to update it that the entire clone has to be decrypted?

EDIT: Solved, I had to reinstall OSX over the top of the clone and I was then able to encrypt.
