Hi all,

I've just noticed that any software on my 2018 MBP that reports the encryption status of my hard disk (Carbon Copy Cloner, DaisyDisk, etc) says it's encrypted. But it isn't. I turned encryption on briefly a few days ago, but then turned it off.

Disk Utility reports 'is encrypted' as 'No (Encrypted at rest)', as it should.

Anyone know why this might be happening?

I would assume Disk Utility is accurate since this utility ships with macOS and that third party utilities need to be updated to reflect the 2018 MBP with its changes due to the T2 chip.

I am not sure what the question is exactly, but to be clear you cannot turn off encryption on a 2018 MBP. When FileVault is disabled the computer will boot and the T2 chip decrypts the drive without requiring your password. When FileVault is enabled the T2 chip won’t decrypt the drive until a password is supplied. In all cases the drive is encrypted. There is an Apple support article detailing this, I posted it in another thread about a few weeks ago if you want to look for it in my comment history. I’m on my phone right now so finding it and posting it again is a bit cumbersome. In short, the drive is encrypted. Carbon Copy Cloned isn’t lying to you.

Ah, right. Didn’t know that - thanks. Don’t think I was at all ambiguous with my question, though, was I?

You weren’t. My apologies, it has been a long week at work with travel mixed in. The above is why it is being reported as encrypted. Sorry, I worded the response so poorly.
