Encrypted EXIF data (or no distance data at all)

So, Nikon is encrypting white balance and distance information in EXIF data.

Is Canon also denying access to this information?
 
Frankly, I don't know which one of the two is worse.

Apparently, Canon used to report distance with the 10D, but later cameras do not.
