I am thinking of getting a router with a USB port on it for plugging my Time Machine drive into for backup (since Apple doesn't make AirPort Time Capsules anymore) so I don't always have to have the hard drive hanging out of my MacBook. The issue is my Time Machine drive is encrypted. Can I used an encrypted Time Machine drive with a router?

Hi! I'm not quite sure what's encrypted : the time machine backup (maybe you put the checkmark to "encrypt backup" before) or the drive itself has the "apfs - encrypted" file system?
The itself process depends on the router. Once you manage to setup the external drive with the router and it's properly recognized, the rest should be easy (you may be asked to provide your Time Machine Backup password, however)
