Encrypted USB drive showing in Sierra but not El Cap

Hello

I encrypted a USB thumb drive using the disk utility function on my machine that is running El Captain.

It does not show up in finder or even in Disk utility anymore on the El Captain machine.

However when I plug it into a macbook i have running Sierra it prompts me for the password and all of the data is intact.

Ideas?
