Yesterday I started using Time Machine with an external HDD and I have enabled the encryption feature on the popup that prompts to use the external disk for backups (the one you get soon after formatting a disk).

Now the disk is formatted to "Mac OS Extended (Journaled, Encrypted) format and data is copied to the disk it seems. But still the disk is being read and "Encrypting Backup Disk" is displayed in gray color in the menu that comes up when I click on the menu bar.

If the disk is already encrypted when formatting it, what kind of encryption does it do after copying data to it? I have been using several encrypted disks for storing and managing data and non of them had to do anything with the encryption after they were formatted in the encrypted file format.

Thanks in advance.
