Encryption (File Vault) and backups

Good day everyone,

I was wondering if I "file vault" my iMac and then do a backup on an external hard drive, will my backup with time machine be encrypted also?

What is the best procedure for encryption and backups?

No it will not. You need to specifically enable encryption on the backup separately.

Just attach an external drive and go into System Presences then in the Time Machine pane, turn on Time Machine. Then when you get the window to select a backup disk, check the encryption box at the bottom.
