If my main system HD is encrypted, does my TM need to be as well?
In that, is the data that's being backed up to the TM disk encrypted since it comes from an encrypted source, and thus adding encryption on the TM disk wont gain anything?
Or does it unencrypt before writing to the TM disk?
TIA

You can turn on TM encryption after the fact and have it encrypt your existing disk/data. But be warned it takes a LONG time.

I would just erase the disk to the encrypted format and start over. Same end result though.

To encrypt the disk you need something like this (but it will take a very long time):

sudo diskutil corestorage convert disk8s2 -passphrase '[yourPasswordHere]'

I would just erase the disk to the encrypted format and start over. Same end result though.

I would do the same!
