Hi all

I use a Macbook M1 with Sequoia installed. I've been backing up to an Apple Time Capsule using v7.8.1 for years.

I just upgraded from 15.5 to 15.6 and now see a warning message: "Future versions of MacOS will no longer support Time Capsule disks for Time Machine backups."

So basically, when I upgrade to MacOS 26 this will be the end of my Time Capsule?

Really love my Time Capsule!

I’ve updated my m4 mbp to 15.6 this morning and the mac automatically already did 2 backups on my external ssd. I didn’t see any warnings

Apple deprecated AFP a long time ago and switched to SMB for Time Machine backups. The TC only supports AFP.

Your best option is to buy a consumer NAS with Time Machine built in or your choice of open source NAS distributions. All of which support Time Machine backups over SMB.

I’ve been using TrueNAS CORE and SCALE for years without issues.

I restored my Intel MacBook Time Machine backup to my M1 MacBook without any issues.

You can still backup to an existing sparse bundle on a Time Capsule in Tahoe: but you can't create a new sparse bundle.

I.e. if you're already using a TC, you can carry on doing so, but you can't select a TC as a new backup location.

However, it's likely that you won't be able to use them at all in OS 27 (or possibly even 26.3, as Apple does sometimes remove stuff mid-cycle).

Well, I guess it's time to change my trusty Time Capsule - over 10 years old! Shame Apple doesn't make TCs anymore. Need to find the best alternative.
