I recently purchased the APC BR1000G UPS Battery Backup mainly because of the feature that allows you to turn off peripherals that need to be powered only when the computer is turned on. When the computer is shut down or put to sleep, these peripherals are turned off after a set amount of time.

I have a USB hard drive connected this way and I have set the UPS to turn off the controlled units 4 seconds after the computer is turned off. When the computer is put in sleep mode, I can see on the APC control panel the power load go down to around 7 watts and then 4 seconds later the USB drive turns off. This turning off of the hard drive causes the iMac to wake up only to go back into sleep mode and then this endless cycle of waking and sleeping does not stop.

I noticed this when I first heard the UPS make a clicking sound every time it turned on and off the controlled sockets. After observing it for a night, I figured out that it was caused mainly by the iMac waking up when a USB peripheral is turned off and then going back to sleep and turning off the USB drive.

I don't think this is a problem with the APC UPS as a search for this problem shows this happening with any USB device. There does not seem to be any way to turn off the wake feature when a USB device is turned off.

Any ideas as to how I can resolve this? For now, I have the USB hard drive plugged into the non-controlled socket on the UPS.
