Does anyone have any suggestions on how to enter DFU mode. I tried RecBoot but it goes to the plug and itunes symbol on the iPhone.

I sadly lost my iPhone 4 this weekend so my brother is letting me use his old school iPhone 3G which the lock/power button is broken. I updated to 4.2.1 and created a custom IPSW with Sn0wbreeze, But I dont know why it's not proceeding. When I use RecBoot and enters Recovery Mode, I select the custom IPSW build from the select in itunes. iTunes then says "preparing iphone for restore" and just stays like that.

Help anyone?!

It took me around 4 hours to enter DFU mode without a power button. I had to use a butterfly clip and prayer to get it to work.

What are you trying to achieve here?

If you can tell me what you really want out of this 3G, then there might be suggestion to make it works?

Are you on AT&T network?
What is the baseband on the phone?

Why dont you go back down to 3.1.2 or 3.1.3
Then you wont need to put it in DFU mode to JB and unlock.

Applejuiced, you are reading my mind. With 3.1.2 or 3.1.3, OP does not need DFU to jailbreak. Blackra1n, spirit or jailbreakme.com will work. However, it will not work if OP's iphone has 05.14 or 05.15 baseband because if OP's iphone has these basebands, the only software will work to upgrade baseband is redsn0w.

dfu

try this:
drain the battery.
when it's drained do the following:
hold the home button.
plug the iPhone.
it should go into DFU mode after.

I tried it twice. Hope it works for you.

This is recovery mode and not DFU. with your method, it will show the USB cable and Itunes and it is recovery mode.

In the 'old days' you could get a fresh ipsw, browse inside and overwrite the LLB files with the applelogo files and follow normal jb pwnage procedure. Maybe check if that's still possible, I remember you had to copy out an applelogo..img3

doesn't work any more i gave in and just brought the flex cable from ebay used a youtube video and fixed the power button when i had that issues, it was quite easy
