All flagship models in Apple's next-generation iPhone 18 lineup will be equipped with a 24-megapixel front facing camera, up from 18 megapixels on iPhone 17 models, according to the latest JP Morgan equity research report seen by MacRumors.

A 24-megapixel front-facing camera was rumored for all iPhone 17 models by multiple sources, but ultimately the rumor never came to pass.

That said, the 18-megapixel front-facing camera found on all iPhone 17 models is still a significant update, so a jump to 24 megapixels would certainly be noteworthy, assuming the report is correct. It would mean that the iPhone 18, iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, iPhone Air 2, and Apple's first foldable iPhone would be able to deliver sharper, more detailed selfies and improved portrait accuracy.

Apple calls its selfie camera on iPhone 17 devices the "Center Stage" front camera, and it has the first square camera sensor on an iPhone. The square sensor provides a wider field of view that can capture more detail, so you can now take a portrait or landscape selfie while holding your phone vertically.

The JP Morgan report also indicates that Apple's foldable iPhone will feature an industry-first 24-megapixel under-screen camera integrated into the device's inner display. Meanwhile, the budget second-generation iPhone 17e and third-generation iPhone 18e will both reportedly continue to use a 12-megapixel front-facing camera.

Starting in 2026, Apple will reportedly split its iPhone lineup between fall and spring launches. The second-generation iPhone Air, iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and a foldable iPhone will launch in the second half of 2026, while the standard iPhone 18 and the iPhone 18e won't launch until spring 2027.

We should also get rear camera upgrades for the Air and Fold, considering how thin they are and they’re gonna priced higher than the Base model and Pro/Pro Max models

Okay so technically the 17 series already has a 24MP camera, so the rumours weren't wrong per se but the way it was applied is a bit unique
The sensor is square, but at any point you can only take a max 4:3 edge to edge photo with it. Treat the full square sensor like a 4:4 image and the math says that we're only ever using 75% of the sensor at once. 24 * 75% = 18.
Take an 18MP photo with your 17. Take the resolution of whatever edge is the longest and square it, you'll be left with a value that matches 24MP.

This rumor if worthless if they don't specify if 24MP refers to
- whole sensor
- marketing name for the cropped functionality

Current iPhones have a 24MP octagonal sensor but to be on the safe side (since it's always cropped) Apple calls it "18MP" in marketing.

Again, Apple never said it was 24 MP. This was just bad reporting by some news outlets. It is 18MP.

Rewatch the video

At around the 37 minute mark they start talking about the new camera. She says the sensor is "almost" twice the size (2x12=24, so not 24).

All of Apple's spec sheets and marketing say 18. Wikipedia says 18. DXOmark says 18. It was only some news sites that picked up a 24 number like some weird Mandela effect.

If I am not finding some Apple announcement of a 24 MP sensor, show me. Or show me some teardown where they found a 24 MP sensor. All I have seen is podcasts and YouTubers that make the claim, but nothing from Apple or nothing that actually verifies this claim.

Make it a 48mp telephoto camera for the Air. No space on the back right so I'll take it how I can 🥲

Hopefully this will be my 13 PM's successor. 14-17 have all been easy skips.

Why not just show the actual report,..it’s been shown all over the internet already.
That image has some mistake look under base iPhone 18 has 12mp Ultrawide camera do you think that Apple will do that big of down grade from base iPhone 17 48mp ultrawide camera ??

More Megaxpixels is always welcome for an iPhone Camera Sensor. Let's have the Apple iPhone take the best selfies photos and videos!

For one, I find it hard to believe that the 18MP sensor will only be used for 1 generation.
Secondly, what benefit would 24MP add to the front camera?
But whatever... it's a rumor ...

It's a simple logical deduction, with all due respect. We know it's a square sensor. We know that the images, which are 4:3, are 18MP images, regardless of if it's oriented vertically or horizontally. So if the ENTIRE sensor is a square, it must be 24 because scaling up the 4:3 image to 4:4 (33% larger area wise) means the actual sensor is 24MP. It's just that, via software, Apple doesn't seem to let you take a square shot with the entire sensor, so they can't really call it a 24MP camera without letting you take actual 24MP photos.

Edit: Also, sensor size isn't the same as megapixel count. For example, going from 12 Pro to 13 Pro the main camera was an increased size, but both were identically 12MP. Sensor sizes often increase to gather more light per pixel and work better in low light.

So it is an 18 MP sensor that bins down to 12 MP images. Just like the 48 MP fusion camera bins down to 24 MP images. You are jumping to the same illogical conclusion by inventing a number that Apple never said. They said it could take "up to" 18 MP images, not bin down to 18 MP. Mandela effect.

The upgrade to front facing camera of 17 series is huge. Very happy with the front camera on my 17 Pro Max. Nice to hear that Apple is planning to improve camera again for the next version and for all 18 models.

No sure we need 24MP front facing camera, I would definitively prefer a smaller form factor, something along the line of height around 135mm, weight around 135gr; something that fit in a normal pocket without breaking it, priced at or a little above the price of the base iPhone. Sad Apple lost the skills to make this.

It's weird that when taking a square selfie, it's a 5MP photo (2316px)
