Erasing and preparing a HDD for OS X installation in Disk Utility

(Single-partition)... Is there any reason/benefit to apply a single partition via the partition tab in DU first and then zeroing that volume rather than just going straight to zeroing the drive itself?? Is there something to gain from doing this?
