Erasing OSX will get rid of malware?

Will using the disk utility to erase the startup disk and then reinstalling Mac OSX get rid of any malware? It should be in the same state as when purchased, correct?

Yes. It will delete everything you have in the hard drive. Boot in recovery mode, format the main hard drive and do a clean install of OSX.
