I sold my 2018 Intel Mac mini to a friend a few months ago and she is asking me about a strange message she is getting. The message is:

Mouse Battery Very Low
Connect to USB to recharge soon.

This would be an understandable message if she were using an Apple rechargeable mouse, but she is using a non-Apple mouse with regular alkaline batteries. Nonetheless, she put fresh batteries in this mouse and is still getting the message. My guess is that she has the wrong mouse driver installed. Can anyone confirm this and explain how she can install the correct driver, all while using her current mouse? (I could lend her a wired mouse if necessary while doing the new driver installation).

If the driver is not the problem, can anyone offer another explanation and explain how to get rid of the message?

First, check if another mouse is listed under Bluetooth devices. Settings > Bluetooth. If so, remove the unwanted device from the list.

You haven't provided any details regarding the mouse manufacturer/model/version/etc. How can one confirm?

Thanks for your suggestion. When I visited my friend to resolve the problem, I found that while she was using a Microsoft battery operated mouse, she also had an older Apple Magic Mouse nearby from her old Mac. Though she wasn't using this mouse, it was indeed listed as paired with her current computer. She has now charged the Magic Mouse and is using it instead of the Microsoft mouse. Problem solved.
