hello!

my girlfriend's ipod "appears to be currupted", and itunes suggests a restore... but then "an unknown error" occurs. (1418) -not a good error, if there is such a thing as one, judging from a quick google search...

this ipod is a black/white screen clickwheel with 20 gighd.

if it's "dead", can it be resurrected in any way?

thanks,

r.

It's not sounding brilliant, but try erasing it in Disk Utility (reformat it as FAT32 or something basic) and then see if iTunes can restore the firmware. :)

i just did a google search and found this,, http://www.1418hell.com/

hell,, i thought i was alone in this! guess not.

edit: CRAP,, i wish i had known of this site a few weeks ago. i could have at least tried some of the possible fixes before i mailed the damn thing to the states.
i'm still looking for steve jobs home phone number.

Error 1418

This problem with the ipods becoming unrestorable seems like a huge oversight on Mac's behalf. My 30GB Iphoto as of only a week ago started playing up and then using Itunes 7.0 I am getting all of the error messages it seems that so many other people are getting. It says my Ipod is corrupt but then won't go through the restore process saying 'error 1418'. This is not restricted to the Ipod shuffle either and Itunes 7.0.2 does not work either.

The Ipod shuffle atleast seems to have a reset utility which people seem to have had success with. Is there anything out yet for the other Ipods (how hard should it be to change the reset utility for ipods other than shuffle?) does anybody know or has heard of a way of fixing it yet?

Thanks for comments although I have seen the link above and pretty much googled the hell out of this Ipod error 1418 issue. Unfortunately all of the recommendations (of which some seem to have worked for others) has not worked for me. The Ipod frustratingly remains unrestorable and unreadable. I can't believe that Apple would not have issued a warning about this as I would never have updated Itunes had I known. It has to be this problem as my Ipod was working fine before this and yet now has this same issue that so may people are having and it is not restricted to the Shuffle either but nearly all Ipods of most generations. Apple have been totally negligent on this issue and hopefully are finding a solution for whch it would be nice to know from them if anything is being done.

exactly! my {friends} 30gig, 250.00$, 2 month old ipod turned into a very lite paperweight the second i updated it as apple suggested. now, our bar is playing crappy, skipping cd's again while i send the thing off for repairs. anybody else see anything wrong here? i too would like to see a statement saying they have fixed this obvious problem.
and yet, no one will give me steve jobs home phone #.:D

since i know you are all DYING for an update,,,
no word from apple in boulder yet.
seems my 'agent' has to make an appointment???? fercrissakes!
this is starting to piss me off.

Ipod 1418 fix by PC_Phantom

Ipod 1418 error fix:

step 1: download ipod reset utility for ipod shuffle (even if your ipod isnt a shuffle)

step 2: run the installer and follow the steps.

note: you will be prompted to restore using itunes, accept and restore using itunes (it should work even if it didnt before)

step 3: enjoy!

my theory on why this works:

the ipod reset utility installs a different driver in the place of the regular ipod driver (this may be the reason that flashing works afterwards). I believe that an obscure software glitch causes the failed flashes.

I'm going to have to say mac's are cool, but there is one giant flaw (error 1418).
I've gone through every thing on apple.com/support everything any site has suggested and nothing not a single thing has fixed or remotely even helped with my situation with error 1418

just one of my opinions about error 1418 is that its a scam Made by apple to scam the consumers (us) into trying to find a a "cure" for error 1418
but in reality you just have to by a new ipod because there is no actual cure for the error

(^thats just one opinion)

I found a way to fix it! I dont know if it'll work for yours too but it worked for on mine. Just press down the center button and MENU at the same time, and it should restart.

1418 error

Hey guys,

Iam posting this post to return back to the community as i learned a lot from you guys while handling this dreaded 1418 error on my IPod shuffle second generation.

why the error occured:
I got my second generation IPod shufle, downloaded itunes version 7.0.0.38 from Apple's wepside and everything worked fine. Then one day, i thought of upgrading itunes. Apple has the latest 7.7 release and i downloaded and installed on my windows XP SP-2. When i connected my IPod to the pc, it said that the music library in my IPod has been compiled with some other version to itunes, syncing will delete all the files on the IPod and re-sync will be required. As i had the backup of all songs on my IPod, i decided to re-sync, but in the middle of re-sync, the itunes hanged and damn, it got stuck. i somehow manage to get out of the hang and reconnected by IPod, itunes prompted that it has detected an IPod in restore mode and i need to restore it in order to use it with itunes 7.7. I decided to restore and received 1418 error.

Tries:
-Tried restore without checking for any update on apple website. Saw the progress bar and then the 1418 error.
- Tried restore with checking for update on apple website, same result.
- Tried formatting IPOd via using format command from start->run and via right clicking on drive (win xp detected my IPod as a Removable drive) and then attempted to restore. same 1418 eror.
- Used IPod reset utility from apple website but the utiliy was not able to mount my IPod :(
- Tried what worked for few pple, disconnecting ipod as soon as the progress bar comes and reconnect it again.. still no luck.

I was scratching  my head and thought its dead (thats what i read from pple responses, though some pple manage to make it work somehow )

Solution:
I somehow uninstalled by latest itunes 7.7 and reinstalled by original itunes version. I received the same option of restoring my opod, i clicked yes and voila.. it restored by Ipod and it set it working... great mannn

i guess, itunes leaves a mark on iPOD regarding which version of itunes was used to sync the ipod. Any kind of upgrade of itunes etc need to be done very cautiously ( i guess no one know what precautions 2 take :p).

i hope this post may help few pple struggling with 1418 error. :)

1418 Error FIXED on PC/Windows

I'd like to revive this thread with a guide on how i fixed the problem. I make no claims that this can help other people however you should be able to take away a few tips from my own experience. My problem may just be specific to me but i hope it helps anyway.

Steps in bold are steps which i think are critical steps that helped to resolve the issue.

It started with an Ipod 30 mac formatted. IT was functioning fine however i wanted it for my pc so i had to bring it over and restore it. Running iTunes 8.1, i plugged it in and it detected fine, however the restore hung for about 20 minutes which i figured was too long. so i pulled it out, got a 1418 error. Closed everything restarded plugged it back in got the same error. This time i went into my computer and just formatted it through windows, this left an empty ipod that only ran in disc mode. Plugged it in again, got the same error.

Went into my computer and realised that the ipod was listed as drive C, and this is definitely not a good thing as windows and itunes gets all giddy with ipods being C drives. So went into disk management and changed the ipod drive to R (or something obscure and not in use). Tried to restore again, this time no error however iTunes hung. I figured that the restore went well however iTunes couldn't get the ipod to restart as it was in disc mode. I yanked the cable out with itunes still open, and then put it back in again, to simulate a soft restart. Voila! Restarted fine, new ipod firmware however iTunes didnt detect. WIth a restart of itunes that solved the problem though.

Hope this helps someone else out there.

once again

For those of us who didnt understand my instuctions:

1. Install the shuffle reset utility

2. Restart your PC

3. Do NOT run the utility (the point of installing it was not to run it!)

4. Open itunes

5. Restore through itunes and enjoy!

Why this works:

The reset utility installer contains a modified Apple Recovery (DFU) USB Driver, This modified driver allows recovery to continue error free where before it would not. I have tested this with all ipods and it hasnt failed for me yet. If you continue recieving errors after this fix, then here is an alternate solution:

1. Dismantle Ipod

2. Sell parts on ebay

3. Buy new Ipod from craigslist.com

Goodnight

Mike
