:( I'm trying to delete stuff from my old external hard drives. Just recently switched from PC to MAC. I can open and see the stuff on my external but when I try to make space and clean it up, I get the error code -61

Trash won't delete it.

help please.

Were these drives formatted as NTFS and used on your PC?

MacOS can read NTFS, but can't write NTFS. This may be your problem.

yes, they're NTFS. Does that mean I can never delete the stuff with my mac? is there a way i can reformat?

Yes to the first part of your question unless you get a 3rd party app like MacFUSE.

Yes you can reformat the drive, but you will lose all files on the drive.

To reformat use Disk Utility.

1. Select the drive device name and click the Partitions tab.
2. Change "Current" to "1 Partition" (this enables the Options button).
3. Click Options.
4. Change the Partition Map from Master Boot Record to GUID (assuming your new mac is Intel).
5. Click OK.
6. Name your new volume and select the MacOS (extended journaling) formatting.
7. Click Apply.

That's it.

MacFuse is integrated into Mac OS X rather than an application you navigate. Anyways once you install MacFuse you also need to install the driver NTFS-3G to read/write to NTFS.
