Error code - 8003

I am getting an error when trying to empty my trash bin with an external hard drive attached and turned on. The message is, "The operation could not be completed because an unexpected error has occurred. (error code - 8003)". When I turn off the external hard drive (which happens to be my Time Machine backup drive" the trash disappears from my trash bin. That's the only way I can remove files from my internal hard drive. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried verifying the disk with Disk Utility?

I used Disk Utility to erase all data on the drive and re-format. That took care of the problem. Thanks for your assistance.
