Error message during label merge on Mavericks

While trying to generate mailing labels, i get the following: "The converter necessary to open this file cannot be found". :( I am using Word for Mac 2008, ver 12 and the data file is Excel also 2008 ver 12 spreadsheet. I have tried .xls and .xlsx versions of the Excel file. It worked fine in Mountain Lion, so is Mavericks the problem? Is there a workaround?
