error message when trying to upgrade

I'm trying to upgrade to ios5 from a 4.2.1 jailbroken phone and it keeps giving me the error message that my device isnt eligible for the upgrade. I've just been hitting restore in itunes, which i guess means a restore and update. am i missing something? should i put it in dfu? thanks!
