I just automatically updated my software yesterday and since then I cannot start Mail, Sherlock, Safari or Mac Help? Tried repairing permissions but got this error message: Error: No valid packages (-9997)

I reset PRAM - nothing
I searched several mac help website - nothing
There is a Library/Receipts folder with the update packages
Running 10.3.9 on a G3 350

Help!?

software update.

I replace the missing BaseSystem.pkg file in the Library/Receipts folder. This removed the Error message from the disk utility and I was able to repair permissions, but Mail, Sherlock, Safari and Mac Help? still do not run.

What's wrong?
