Any advice on the cause of this exception error?

"Exception Type: EXC_BREAKPOINT (SIGTRAP)
Exception Codes: 0x0000000000000002, 0x0000000000000000
Exception Note: EXC_CORPSE_NOTIFY"

Typically occurs with Safari and says quit unexpectedly (but often does not actually quit). Debating whether I should attempt to repair this possible hardware-related issue or replace the computer?

Years ago I had multiple crashes and ended up having to replace a faulty RAM stick. However, I mainly had bad access exception errors then and this hardware issue did not show up on any diagnostic testing.

The SIGTRAP is probably caused by an exception, e.g. bad memory access. There should be a stack trace providing the location of the exception and the call history. It is however not likely to help you. Report the problem to Apple.

You could run HW diagnostics to rule out any HW issues.

There has been some reports of issues with the new start page in Big Sur if that if that is what you are running.

Hardware test was fine, but it was also fine when my RAM stick was actually faulty a few years ago (to the point it wouldn’t turn on eventually). It is a mid-2012 MacBook Pro with a 2016 SSD, 1 2016 RAM stick, and 1 original RAM stick.

In my experience this is mostly SW related. It can be a bug, but also a corrupt asset used by Safari like a corrupt image on a page. The stack trace may give you a hint, do you have it?
