Just bought a brand-new WD My Book for Time-Machine.
Took it out of the packaging for the first-time and before I even hooked up the power to the My Book - and just trying to hook the USB 3.0 Micro B cable male-end to the My Book female-end when I saw a quick spark from plugging the cable into it.
Frankly this wasn't even from my fingertips (so definitely not from my own body) but from the package supplied USB cable itself to the My Book. No other discharges noticed afterwards.
Went ahead and connected the power to the My Book and then to my Mac and everything seems to be working fine as though nothing happened...
Still I'm worried about that initial spark...
Should I return the My Book to the store and get another? Or am I getting ESD paranoid...
