Preordered an iPhone 11 Pro Max, AT&T through IUP to upgrade from an iPhone Xs Max. My iPhone Xs Max was setup with an eSIM (primary, number being “upgraded) and physical SIM, both with AT&T, same plan.

during the in store turn in, pickup and activation, the existing eSIM was transferred/activated on the new 11 Pro Max physical SIM. I couldn’t rectify using the eSIM QR I had saved; it was no longer valid.

Simple fix with a trip to AT&T around the corner, but still disappointed the upgrade and activation work flow for the new phone didn’t present the option to use eSIM. Or maybe it does and the Apple Store employee didn’t present me this option?

offering the anecdote to those with AT&T eSIM who might encounter the same issue. Don’t forget to pop and save the physical SIM like I did. Cost me $5 and tax for that mistake along with the $5 and tax to acquire a new eSIM.

ESIM does not automatically transfer. Ever. Its not a SIM. Your situation is totally self-inflicted because you wanted you main number in the eSIM.

Sorry for your troubles. My eSim on Verizon transferred without an issue. All I had to do was rescan the QR code that Verizon sent me and was back up and running within a minute.

Yep and lesson learned. Hopefully my experience with an AT&T eSIM helps others upgrading. Bottom line, I couldn’t find a definitive answer online, through my local AT&T store, or from the Apple employee selling me the phone beforehand. Not blaming; it’s a relatively new feature. It was a cheap fix.

Ideally, their will be an option to purchase the eSIM online in the future. And it would be nice to have the option to target eSIM or physical sim in the AT&T activation work flow.

Always use a physical SIM as your primary number. Then it's easy to swap out the chip from phone to phone with zero issues
