Does anyone know how the situation is when using a eSIM in an iPhone … Does the other number (eSIM) has access as well to iMessages? What happened to WhatsApp? a second account or the same - how the eSIM behave in the iPhone setup… Got an old Nokia with dual sim and that’s easy - the message is marked relating to sim but end up in the same box - outgoing calls have to be selected (which sim/number) before calling - incoming can have different ringtones

Anyone has experience with this?

I have used a second SIM before while travelling to the US; and basically for WhatsApp it just let me carry on using the same account, even though technically it had a different phone number associated with the SIM. I don't use iMessage so can't say what happens there but it was a seamless experience.

Hey there,

I can answer the question myself now because I switched from SIM to eSIM with Smarty. I’m using my eSIM now, and I don’t even have a SIM card inserted. Everything is the same—you wouldn’t notice any difference.

Thanks,

Not sure why you would expect anything different. Your eSIM has just effectively replaced your (physical) sim, just as if you had put in a replacement physical sim. You wouldn’t expect anything different under those circumstances.

Now, what happens if you switch between your eSIM and a (different) physical sim (or even different) eSIM ?

I just took an international trip and only used a travel eSIM for the whole time. With iMessage you can register both a phone number and an email address and I was expecting it to work exactly the same using just the email address, which it did. But I'm 80% sure I also saw a pop-up that said that your normal number would also work with iMessage with the travel eSIM. I had my primary, normal eSIM turned off for the entire trip and it was never an issue.

Each location has another IMEI number…
Anyway - I am using now my iPad (without cellular) for iMessage and WhatsApp- and as well my Apple Watch (with cellular but without eSIM/plan) as well and the three are living happy and in harmony together…
