I just purchased a new 2.4Ghz MacBook. I would like to etch my phone # into the case so that if it is lost or stolen there is a chance that I will get it back. Where is the best location to etch my # to avoid damage to internal components.

Thanks

You'd be surprised. Some thieves are extremely smart and tech savvy.

Personally, I think a good way to do it, and extremely cheap too, would be to take a paper clip, unfold it, and right it underneath right by the battery. Back when I had my MacBook I did this and it didn't take away from the look.

yea that undercover thing remainded me of that guy who put porn on his computer and had some virtualcamera filming the scrren with geeksquad

Depends on how you plan to etch it. I'd say the best place is right on the top. If your intention is that someone would find it and call the number, you shouldn't put it where it'll be hard to notice. Who finds a notebook and looks around the case for a number etched into it, know what I mean?

+1 for undercover. Also, for the new hard drive comment, a firmware password will take care of it.

+1 for the firmware password. The Undercover group even mention that as a deterrent for reinstalls.

Seriously... I'm going to Ireland for my first semester of my freshman year at college and my MacBook Pro is NOT leaving this country without Undercover on it.

Coincidentally, anyone care to sell me their rev. 1 MacBook Pro for around $700? Or even a later model, but I'd assume that only the first ones would go for that much.

I take it that you do not intend to ever sell it.

That is the first thing that came to my mind. Etching your phone number on the case of your MacBook is okay as long as you never plan on selling it...

...unless you don't mind letting the person who buys your laptop on eBay know your private line. ;) :)
