ethernet adaptor disconnect when MBA sleeps

Every time my macbook air goes to sleep, my USB ethernet adaptor gets disconnected. the only way to reconnect it is to unplug the adaptor and plug it back in.

I am running 10.11.3 has anyone encountered similar issues.
