I have ethernet connected to my laptop but I also am in a wi-fi range, my question is do I have to turn off airport every time I use my ethernet to make sure the wifi isnt being used (because the ethernet is much faster) or does it just automatically know to use the ethernet when it is connected even if airport is on?

In System Preferences->Network you can change the order of connection priority.

In Leopard you click on the cogwheel at the bottom of the list of connections then select "Set Service Order" then you drag them to the order you want.
