A wonderful singer. Sad in her later years, she lived hard and made some great music. Like many black singers of the time, her music was (poorly) covered by white singers.

But she persevered, for better and worse...

She made it far easier for Mavis Staples, and others, that followed her.

One of the all time greats.

I saw her live in 1993 North Sea Jazz.

Great voice great person.

She was so sick. Glad she's just not in pain anymore. It's always nice to leave a legacy though.
