I'm a big Korean TV drama fan. If you are like me, you'll noticed they are starting to use non-Korean brand items in their recent TV drama now. Before, all the cars in the TV drama are all Hyundai. Now I see more Nissan and BMW.

Also, the recently #1 TV drama in Korea 'City Hunter' is using iPhone & iPad!!. The main actress carried both all the time, even some 'Facetime' talk happened in there. Before the primary phone in Korean drama is Samsung Anycall. This is the first Korean drama I've seen that has Apple products and use them all the time.

In the US TV show "Monk", Natalie Teeger drives a Lexus. I can only imagine this means that even Americans hate Ford, Chevrolet and Chrysler now.

There is money in "product placement", and this is unlikely to change any time soon.

It may be as simple as a vehicle being supplied, or, for the iPhone etc, iPhones and $$$$$. ;)

Yeah, this is just 'product placement' and I'm sure they made some money off from it. But there is a pride in Korean culture and they believe Made in Korean are always the best. Especially Samsung is one of the biggest sponsors in Korean entertainment over there. Just like Apple is having difficulties getting into Japan. I think it's quite interesting to see Apple making these culture changes.

I've watched quite a few Korean dramas and I agree that, until recently they would just show Korean everything - even if those Korean products were crap.

It was funny at times, because invariably every drama has like a uber rich character and they would drive a Hyundai coupe and have some Samsung electric gear, when in reality they would be driving a foreign car and using Apple or Sony Tech.

I first started noticing the cars changing, and then the odd electronic product.

I think they had to start doing it when, in real life, the stars started using iPads etc.

I got a Samsung LED telly recently and I really wish I had got a Sony now, the panel itself is pretty good, but the build quality is awful.

Probably not but does anybody even buy these any more except for trucks and SUVs? Over here on the East Coast they're becoming a rare sight. So what's the point of product placement if everybody knows the cars are average at best.

Kind of closely related, in Japan many shows have "grand sponsors" that advertise during the show. What I find interesting is that MANY anime programs shown in Japan have--of all things!--McDonald's as a "grand sponsor," a relationship that dates back many years.

But getting back on topic, :) maybe it's now "cool" for Korea TV dramas to have people carry iPhones and iPads? And that's despite Samsung's own Galaxy series of touchscreen cellphones and tablet computers?
