Ever had your iPhone 6 auto-mute during a call?

With my iPhone 6 sitting on a table during a call or holding it suddenly the mute button activates and/or the contact list pops up on the screen. This usually happens multiple times during a call and happens for both me and my wife. I've been through multiple Apple techs and they all are clueless and we have 2 new iPhone 6's in the mail coming from them now. We both have stock IOS 9.2 and this has been happening for 2 or 3 months. It happens at home or away whether using speaker, headphones, or normal hearing mode. It happened 5 times yesterday when talking to the Apple tech before they just decided to send us both new phones. I have reset my phone to factory conditions and the problem still happens. I suspect software over hardware since we both have the same problem but Apple continues to tell me no one else has ever experienced this to their knowledge. It is driving me nuts and I'm not confident that the new phones will fix it.
