ever since trying to email myself a picture, battery drains horribly!

Tried to email myself a pic of my daughter via gmail. two of them actually. They just sat there and tried and tried to send. I went into airplane mode and it allowed me to select and delete them. I did so and now they're gone but something has got to be wrong still cause I'm now losing battery at 1% every few minutes.

I've tried deleting and re-adding the email (gmail) account, I tried a hard reset of the phone...

suggestions?

I'm probably going to restore the device (setting it up as a new phone) this evening since I don't really have too much on it.

it seems that removing the account resolves the issue (it doesn't drain at 1% every 4 minutes) but as soon as I re-add the account, it goes back to trying over and over.

very frustrating.
