Every Time I Open Contacts My iPhone Checks My Email

I have my iphone 4 set to manually check for email. The thing that has been happening is every time I open contacts to call someone my phone checks my email and I get the "new email ring." This is starting to get very annoying. Even when I go into my favorites it checks my email.

Anyone know anything about this one?

If you have MobileMe, it's automatically doing a sync check when you hit any of the online services.
