i cant figure out what this is. how do i get rid of it?

It could be trying to perform a firmware update, start in safe mode, or the hard drive is failing. Since you said it's every time you start the machine, my guess is the HDD.

Try restarting your machine in Verbose mode (hold command and V at startup) to gain more insight.
 
when i boot into verbose mode, what am i looking for to see if my HDD is failing. this is a 2 month old new macbook pro. my power book G4 and older macbook pro both had HDD failures, but not this soon.
