All of a sudden my Mac is running slow - all applications take longer than normal time to open

Even with Safari when I go to any website, its like the application hangs for a bit, spinning wheel - then it loads.

Opening programs - app bounces 3 or 4 times longer than before...

Any suggestions?

Fire up Disk Utility, do a Repair Permissions. Try to Repair Disk, or at least Verify Disk. If any errors turn up on Verify, boot from your OSX DVD and run Disk Utility in there to do a Repair Disk.

Also try running the Console app and see if any particular errors are coming up repeatedly.

OR in the case where you the type of person that doesnt turn their computer off for months, or even years. (in other words your computer hasnt restarted in a long time)

simply restart your mac, and im confident all will be good again.

I get this problem once in every 25 bootups or so. A quick restart fixes it. Not sure what the problem is, but it doesn't bother me hugely since a reboot takes barely any time at all in the Mac world.
